Growth and puberty development in pediatric chronic kidney disease patients: Role of dialysis and transplantation

Background
CKD is known to cause growth retardation and delayed puberty in children, but modifying factors such as dialysis and transplantation are incompletely characterized.
Key findings
Among 52 pediatric patients (ages 0-18) with CKD stages 2-5, mean age at menarche was 12.79 years and 32.8% had primary amenorrhea; CKD stage (r=0.35, p=.02) and age at diagnosis (r=-0.28, p=.01) significantly correlated with pubertal development.
Clinical implications
Early detection and comprehensive CKD management, including attention to dialysis and transplant timing, may help improve growth and pubertal outcomes in this vulnerable population.
